The Value of Monarch Waystations
By creating and maintaining a Monarch Waystation you are contributing to monarch conservation, an effort that will help assure the preservation of the species and the continuation of the spectacular monarch migration phenomenon.
I have finally got this place on the map Officially as a Certified Monarch Butterfly Habitat Waystation this past week of April 2017 an a Pesticide-Free Zone, that I started planning for back when I first moved in here of Jan. 2010, an have been planting lots of different things to attract the Monarch thru the years, to help bring them back a re-populate them to this part of the country and giving them a safe place to stop and rest eat an lay eggs on their 2000 plus mile migration journey each year from Mexico to Canada and back.
You probably have not seen as many of them these days as you did when you were younger like me and there are many reasons for that but the main reason is the use of pesticides here in this part of the country that kills off their main food source the milkweed plant. it's pretty much their lifeblood if you will in the whole world .... they lay their eggs on it and when the larvae hatch it becomes their food source .but without the milkweed they will perish. it's being said that in a few years if things don't change, the only place you, your kids or grandkids will be able to see a Monarch in real life here in the Midwest in the near future will only be in pictures cause there will be no food for them here, and many of us throughout the Midwest and Country are trying to change that and hopefully you are one of them.
This has been one of my ongoing projects of mine since I moved in here creating a place for nature...I may not have a lot of land here, but what I do have I am putting it to good use ...
What You Can Do
To offset the loss of milkweeds and nectar sources we need to create, conserve, and protect milkweed/monarch habitats. We need you to help us and help monarchs by creating "Monarch Waystations" (monarch habitats) in home gardens, at schools, businesses, parks, zoos, nature centers, along roadsides, and on other unused plots of land. Without a major effort to restore milkweeds to as many locations as possible, the monarch population is certain to decline to extremely low levels.
